ERIE, Pa. -- Former Mercyhurst College baseball coach and current Univ. of Pittsburgh head coach Joe Jordano has been elected into the Metropolitan Erie Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, joining nine others selected for induction June 22.

An Erie native and 2009 inductee into the Mercyhurst College Athletics Hall of Fame, Jordano was a Tech Memorial and Glenwood League star prior to his tenure as head coach at Mercyhurst College (1988-97) and now at Pitt (1998-present).

While at Mercyhurst, collected 283 wins against 118 losses in a 10-year span for a .706 winning percentage, ranking second in victories to current head coach Joe Spano.  Jordano began his career began with the 1988 season, where he posted a 19-17 mark before going on to post 20 or more wins in eight of his final nine seasons. He led the Lakers to five of their six NCAA Regional appearances, including four straight to close out his career at Mercyhurst.

At the helm in 1997, Jordano's squad recorded a 40-8 mark, the best record in single-season history. All told, six of his squads rank in the top 10 for season victories.

Though no longer with the program, the longest-serving head coach in Jordano and his players continue to leave their marks as three players still own 59 different single-season and career records in offensive categories while 18 pitchers own 41 single-season and career marks.

At Tech Memorial, Jordano played both baseball and golf and in 1981 helped the Post 11 American Legion baseball team to a district championship and a third place finish in the state tournament. While playing in the Glenwood League, Jordano was named MVP in 1982 and went on to win batting and home run titles for the league in 1984 and 1988.

Jordano played his collegiate ball at Westminster College, batting .302 for his career, and was named to the all-district team in 1985. At the helm of the Mercyhurst program, Jordano recorded a 283-118 record and was named the Louisville Slugger Coach of the Year three times (1995, 1996, 1997).

Jordano, Pitt's 13-year skipper, has led the Panthers to their highest ranking in school history at No. 20, and a 38-18 record. Pitt has hit numerous milestones in 2010 and are vying for their first Big East title since 1994.

At 366 wins in his career at Pitt, Jordano currently ranks second on the all-time wins list for the Panthers, closing in on Bobby Lewis' school record of 402 from 1955-90. In 2004, Jordano was named the Big East Coach of the Year, leading Pitt to its second-most wins in a season (38).
