ATHENS, Ohio - The Mercyhurst College men's rowing team earned three first-place finishes at the 46th Annual Mid America Collegiate Rowing Association Championships (MACRA) in Athens, Ohio. The Lakers also placed one boat in a tie for first place in its final.
Mercyhurst rowing claimed second place in the overall combined team points standings out of 15 teams entered. Grand Valley State earned first place, followed by Mercyhurst and Ohio State in that order.
The Lakers' men's pair, consisting of
Ben Caplinger at bow and
Thomas Hall at stroke, earned first place in the final heat with a time of 7:32. The pair of
Scot Bly and
Giancarlo Incorvaia also raced in the men's pair event, placing fifth in 7:53.
Mercyhurst entered its lightweight eight (
Michael Baggaley,
Chris Register,
David Cullmer,
Jake Schuppe,
Michael Orzolek, #R.J. Rubino#,
Jovan Jovanovic,
Ivan Palikuca, and coxswain
Ryan Browning) in two classifications, as the boat claimed the championship in the lightweight eight in 6:24. Grand Valley State placed second in 6:27. Competing up a division in the men's varsity eight, the Lakers' eight tied for first place with Grand Valley State with a time of 5:57. GVSU earned first place in a 1250 re-row.
The freshman four, made up of
Chris Branchick,
Adam King, Dan Baggaley,
Jeff Murt, and coxswain John Thiede, earned first place in its final heat, rowing in 7:00, seven seconds faster than second-place Grand Valley State.
The MACRA marked the final regular-season regatta for the Lakers this season. Mercyhurst will compete at the Dad Vail Regatta Friday, May 7 and Saturday, May 8, as the men's competition will serve as its championship event for the season.
The seeding for the Dad Vail is expected out by Tuesday.
