Lakers Honored by PSAC; Yost Named Coach of Year

ERIE, Pa. – Mercyhurst College men's tennis players Kyle King, Keith Whittingham and Mijo Cotic have been honored on the All-PSAC team, as announced by the league office this afternoon. In addition, head coach Ray Yost was named the PSAC Coach of the Year.

King and Whittingham were each voted to the All-PSAC Men's Tennis Team for singles, which consists of two players apiece from Bloomsburg, Kutztown and Mercyhurst. Whittingham and Cotic made it as a doubles team, one of three pairs honored.

Yost, in his 16th season at Mercyhurst, earns his second conference coach of the year honor, also being named GLIAC Coach of the Year in 2005. Coach Yost led the team to a 13-11 record and a second-place finish in the PSAC Championship. The Lakers finished the regular season strong, going 10-6 during the spring.

King posted a 19-5 record in singles play, primarily competing in the third position. He went a perfect 4-0 in PSAC matches, and was also a key contributor at doubles, going 13-5 at No. 2 doubles with Adam Marnik and 13-6 overall. King was named PSAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week March 15. A senior, King has posted a 50-28 career record at singles and has gone 45-34 in doubles competition.

Whittingham made an immediate impact on the Lakers after transferring from NCAA Division I Charleston Southern. He fashioned a stellar 12-1 singles record, including 9-1 at the first position and 3-0 in conference play. Whittingham was named PSAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week April 19 after helping the Lakers to an upset of regionally-ranked Charleston. The junior from Erie also went 8-6 at No. 1 doubles with Cotic, earning a second All-PSAC mention for both athletes.

Cotic, a 2009 All-PSAC selection at singles, went 8-6 with Whittingham at No. 1 doubles this season, and 10-11 overall in doubles competition. He went 9-12 at singles, splitting time at first and second position while posting a 2-1 conference singles record. A senior from Mississauga, Ontario, Cotic has earned 34 career singles wins and 36 doubles victories.

The Laker men currently hold a13-11 overall record and finished second in the PSAC Tournament, and await announcement of NCAA Tournament selection, which takes place Wednesday.
