Five Wrestlers Earn All-Academic Honors

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College wrestling team added to its list of postseason achievements, with five Lakers earning All-Academic honors from the NCAA Division II National Wrestling Coaches Association.

Senior Andy Lamancusa and junior Josh Shields, both three-time All-Americans, were named to the All-Academic First Team for the third year in a row. Shields earned a second-place finish at 165 lbs. at the 2010 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championship while Lamancusa placed third at 157 lbs.

Freshman Jordan Shields was earned second team honors, while sophomores Pat Carter and Pat Leahy were given honorable mention.

Josh Shields, majoring in international business, followed up his 2009 national championship with another fine season, going a personal-best 37-4 while capturing second place in the national finals. He took a 21-bout winning streak into the national championship match. The Burrell, Pa. native is a two-time Super Region I champion and earns his third academic honor.

A senior education major, Lamancusa posted a record-setting season on the mat, setting the career record for victories with 119 while breaking his own single-season mark for victories in a 39-10 campaign. Lamancusa placed third at the 2010 national championship, winning five straight bouts to claim his third All-America award. He is the only Lake to win three Super Region I championships, doing so his first three seasons. Lamancusa also holds several career records in program history.

Jordan Shields, a sports medicine major, completed his first season with a 13-8 record, earning his first all-academic honor. Carter, a business management major, and Leahy, a business major, each posted seven wins on the season while being named to the all-academic team for the first time.

For the eighth season in a row, the Lakers had multiple wrestlers earn All-American status, with Lamancusa and Shields finishing in the top three for the second consecutive year. Mercyhurst finished the season with a 6-12 dual-meet record, placing ninth at the Super Region I Championships and 14th at the national championships.
