ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst College men's basketball team plays host to California (Pa.) Saturday, Feb. 27 in a game which will help decide each team's post-season destiny. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m., and the team will honor its eight seniors with a brief ceremony before the men's game.
The Lakers (17-9, 7-6 PSAC West) and Vulcans (18-10, 6-7 PSAC West) are currently fourth and fifth in the PSAC West, with four teams from each division qualifying for the PSAC tournament. If the Lakers win, they will clinch the third seed in the division, and play at Clarion Tuesday, March 2. If Cal wins, Gannon loses and a three-way tie happens between Gannon, Cal and Mercyhurst, the teams will have to wait until all games are completed on Saturday to determine the playoff picture.
Mercyhurst claimed the first meeting between the two teams this season, winning 61-60 Jan. 30 at Hamer Hall.
Jordan Armstrong led the Lakers with 17 points. Cal erased a 10-point second-half deficit and led 57-56 with 4:59 remaining. Mercyhurst responded with a decisive 5-0 run, and held on. Andrew Young posted game highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Vulcans, who lost their sixth straight PSAC West game to open the divisional slate.
