Lamancusa Sets All-Time Victories Mark in Lakers 31-9 Loss at UPJ

Andy Lamancusa set the all-time victories mark (110) on Friday.
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- Fourth-ranked Pitt-Johnstown (12-2) proved to be too much for Mercyhurst (5-12) to handle on Friday night, taking seven of 10 matches en route to a 31-9 decision over the Lakers.

At 157 lbs., senior Andy Lamancusa became Mercyhurst's all-time leader in victories with an 8-6 decision over Zach Lundgren. The two-time All-American recorded his 110th career win to surpass former record holder Zack Schafer, who has held the mark since 2007. Just the fourth wrestler in Mercyhurst history to reach the 100-win plateau, Lamancusa is now 110-42 in his career and 30-8 overall this season.

“It's definitely a great accomplishment, and I'm happy I'm ranked up there with those guys,” Lamancusa said. “I wanted to accomplish this record but there's still other big things that I need to check off my list. There's still a lot of work to be done before it's over.”

Ranked third in the national rankings, Lamancusa already owns the career mark for takedowns and major decisions and set the single-season record for wins a year ago, posting a 37-10 record en route to a third-place finish at the NCAA II National Championships.

“I think this is an awesome accomplishment for Andy,” said head coach Mike Wehler.” “He's worked really hard for it. It's nice to go down as one of the best that's ever wrestled here and he definitely deserves this honor. His goal is to become a national champion, and he was so close last year. The honor is a great honor but it's more for later to look back on. Right now, he's working towards a national title.”

Also recording victories for the Lakers was Josh Shields at 165 lbs. and Fred Hale at heavyweight. Shields, the nation's top-ranked grappler, posted a 3-1 decision over third-ranked Kyle Keane. The reigning national champion won his 13th consecutive match and moves to 29-3 on the year. With the victory, he also moves into the top 10 in career victories with a mark of 81-16.

Hale closed out the Lakers scoring with an 8-4 win over Chris Dempsey.

The Lakers return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 13, when they host Ashland at 7 p.m. in the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. Head coach Mike Wehler and his team will honor seniors Lamancusa and Mike Sullivan in a prematch ceremony.

“I have a lot of people coming up tomorrow night and the kid I'm wrestling is one I went against in high school so there's some history,” said Lamancusa. “It should be fun though. Hopefully I can continue to build on the record.”
