CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The Mercyhurst College wrestling team dropped three matches at the National Wrestling Coaches Association / Cliff Keen National Duals. The Lakers fell 38-6 to No. 1 Nebraska Omaha before suffering a 27-11 setback to San Francisco. In the extra match, No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney handed the Lakers a 27-10 loss.
Leading the way for the Lakers (2-5) was the nation’s top-ranked 165-pounder in reigning national champion
Josh Shields. The junior narrowly defeated UNO’s Ryan Pankoke by a 1-0 count while adding an 8-0 major decision against SFU’s Zach Sesar.
Also going undefeated was red-shirt 149-pounder
Jordan Shields. He defeated UNO’s Taiten Weatherbee 3-2 before taking a 5-3 decision against SFU’s Joshua Nolan.
The Lakers top-ranked 157-pounder,
Andy Lamancusa suffered a 7-5 defeat against George Ivanov but rebounded with 14-4 major decision over Isaiah Jimenez of SFU.
Mercyhurst returns to action on Jan. 14 when they travel to Findlay for a 7 p.m. match.
