EDMOND, Okla. – Mercyhurst College wrestlers
Andy Lamancusa and
Josh Shields remain the top-ranked grapplers in their respective weight classes, as released in the latest NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association poll.
At 157-lbs., Lamancusa owns a 15- 5 record after a 2-2 showing at the 47th Annual Midlands Tournament while Shields posts a 16-3 mark at 165-lbs. after his 2-2 performance at the Midlands Tournament.
As a team, the Lakers are among others receiving votes after spending time in the Top 20 of the first three rankings of the year.
Regionally, the duo rank No. 1 at their weights while teammate
Jordan Shields holds fourth-place at 149-lbs. as a red-shirt freshman.
Nebraska-Omaha remained atop the NCAA Division II wrestling rankings as the defending national champion Mavericks were once again the unanimous No. 1 pick, it was announced Tuesday by the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches As¬sociation.
UNO received all eight first-place votes in balloting of coaches from around the country to finish with 160 points in the third regular-season poll after also topping the preseason rankings. The Mavericks were No. 1 in all seven polls last season en route to running away with their fifth Division II national title.
Newberry (S.C.) stayed No. 2 with 150 points, while 2008 national champion Nebraska-Kearney and seven-time national champion Central Oklahoma tied for third with 136 points. Pittsburgh-Johnstown (Pa.) is fifth with 125 points.
Rounding out the top 10 is Western State (Colo.), Wisconsin-Parkside, Augustana (S.D.), St. Cloud State (Minn.) and Adams State (Colo.).
UNO will be the No. 1 seed for the NWCA Division II National Duals that will be held this Saturday and Sunday in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Joining the defending champion Mavericks in that 16-team event will be Newberry, Nebraska-Kearney, Central Oklahoma, Western State, Wisconsin-Parkside, Augustana, St. Cloud State, Upper Iowa, Minnesota State, West Liberty, Fort Hays State, Gan¬non, San Francisco, Central Missouri and Mercyhurst.
The 2010 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships will be held March 12-13 in Omaha, Neb.
Next up for the Lakers is the National Wrestling Coaches Association / Cliff Keen Duals on Jan. 9 -10 at the University of Northern Iowa.
