Shields Remains No. 1; Lakers Among Receiving Votes

Complete Rankings - .pdf

EDMOND, Okla. – No. 1 Josh Shields remains the top-ranked wrestler in Division II at 165 lbs. while Andy Lamancusa drops to third after spending three weeks as the top-ranked grappler at 157 lbs.

As a team, the Lakers are among those receiving votes for the second straight week, as released in the latest NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association poll.

Regionally, the duo rank No. 1 at their weights while teammate Fred Hale enters the rankings for the first time in his career at No. 6.

Nebraska-Omaha remained atop the NCAA Division II wrestling rankings as the defending national champion Mavericks were once again the unanimous No. 1 pick.

UNO received all eight first-place votes in balloting of coaches from around the country to finish with 160 points in the fourth regular-season poll after also topping the preseason rankings. The Mavericks, who were No. 1 in all seven polls last season en route to winning their fifth Division II national title, captured the NWCA Division II National Duals crown Jan. 9-10 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Newberry (S.C.) received all eight second-place votes and stayed No. 2 with 152 points after a runner-up finish at the National Duals, with Pittsburgh-Johnstown (Pa.) -- who didn't compete in the National Duals -- moving from fifth to third.

There was quite a shakeup in the rest of the top 10 due to results from the National Duals. Minnesota State jumped from 12th to fourth in the rankings following a third-place finish, Gannon (Pa.) leaped from 16th to No. 5 after taking fourth and Upper Iowa went from 11th to sixth in the poll following a fifth-place showing.

Rounding out the top 10 is Wisconsin-Parkside, St. Cloud State (Minn.), Nebraska-Kearney and Augustana (S.D.).

The 2010 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships will be held March 12-13 in Omaha, Neb.

Next up for the Lakers is the Super Region I Duals hosted by Newberry College, Jan. 22-24.
