Gaffney, S.C. – The No. 13 Mercyhurst College wrestling team finished its two-match swing of South Carolina this past weekend with a 1-1 record. The Lakers defeated Limestone by a score of 24-17 while later falling to Newberry 30-6.

 

In the match against Limestone, the Lakers came out strong with senior Payne Lint winning 16-5 over the Saint's Matt Hall in the 125lb meeting. Freshman Michael Baxter followed that performance with a 16-0 victory in the 133lb bout before senior Lenny Calhoun triumphed 6-1 in the 149lb class. Junior Andy Lamancusa and freshman Kevin Hardy won by the scores of 9-4 and 3-0 in the 157lb while senior Trevor Gallo pinned his opponent in 4:48 to cap off the 197lb match.

 

Against No. 7 Newberry, the Lakers fell behind early with the Indians taking four of the first six matches before going on to win the final four. Baxter claimed an 11-6 win over No. 7 Andrew Young while Hardy won a 5-2 decision against Vin Salek.

 

Mercyhurst returns to action this weekend when the Lakers compete in the Keystone Classic on Sunday, Nov. 23 in Philadelphia, Pa.
