Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College men's water polo team completed the series sweep of cross-town rival Gannon Wednesday evening, defeating the Golden Knights, 13-5, at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion in Erie, Pa.
With the win, the Lakers improve to 9-4 overall and claim sole possession of first place in the Collegiate Water Polo Association race.
Offensively, senior
Jorge Montero led the team with four goals and two assists for six points. Senior
Andrew Schonhoff contributed four tallies and an assist while classmate Trevor Mclllwaine added three goals and a helper.
Entering the game tied with Gannon with eight points apiece in the CWPA standings, Mercyhurst's victory gave the Lakers an opportunity to control their own destiny down the road. The Lakers held the edge in every quarter, outscoring the Golden Knights 2-1 in the first, 4-0 in the second, 2-1 in the third and 5-3 in the fourth.
Sophomore
Andy Sekulski won his eighth game of the year, stopping two shots and adding two steals in the process.
Mercyhurst heads to the road for its next two games on Saturday, Oct. 11, taking on Washington and Jefferson at 12 p.m. followed by a contest at Salem International at 7 p.m.
